Glen Lyon and The Hermitage private tour of Scotland – scenic Highland view

Explore Glen Lyon and The Hermitage – New Tours with Alba Experiences

Scotland is full of hidden gems, and our latest research trip has uncovered one of the most breathtaking: Glen Lyon, often described by Sir Walter Scott as the “longest, loneliest, and loveliest glen in Scotland.” We couldn’t agree more.

This new tour is perfect for photographers, walkers, and anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the Scottish Highlands. Here’s what makes it so special.

Praying Hands of Mary – A Legendary Rock Formation

Our adventure began at the Praying Hands of Mary, a striking rock formation perched 600 meters above the glen floor. Its shape resembles a pair of hands in prayer.

Legend adds even more magic. Locally, it’s also called Fionn’s Rock, split in two by an arrow fired by the Celtic hero Fionn mac Cumhaill. The dramatic scenery and mythology make this an ideal spot for photography and reflection.

The Roman Bridge – A Picturesque Highland Landmark

Next, we visited the Roman Bridge, located toward the eastern side of Glen Lyon. Despite its name, the bridge dates from the 17th to 18th century, not the Roman era.

However, it’s the perfect place to capture classic Highland scenery. Surrounded by forests and cascading waterfalls, the Roman Bridge provides a storybook backdrop for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Loch Faskally – Vibrant Views and Highland Lunch

Our journey continued to Loch Faskally, a serene loch encircled by the Tayside Forest. The vibrant colours of the water and surrounding trees make it an ideal stop for scenic photography.

Just a short drive away is the charming town of Pitlochery, with cosy restaurants perfect for lunch. We always enjoy a stop here — the combination of natural beauty and local hospitality is unbeatable.

The Hermitage – Scotland’s Timeless Attraction

Our final stop was The Hermitage, billed as one of Scotland’s oldest tourist attractions. It’s easy to see why.

Here, the mighty Black Linn Falls cascade past Ossian’s Hall, a Victorian-era viewpoint offering perfect panoramas of the surrounding woodland. Honestly, we could have spent the entire day here. Walking the trails, photographing the falls, and soaking in the natural beauty make it the perfect tour finale.
