We visited Scotland with Alba Experiences on a private tour to Doune Castle, Stirling, and the Wallace Monument. The experience was amazing. James, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and explained everything clearly with great stories and local insight. We wanted to see St. Andrews on our “free” day from the other tours that were provided by our trip organizer. James was a standout guide – prepared, flexible, fun, passionate, and knowledgeable. He delivered a great experience at the golf course, golf museum, and golf store (plus lunch reservations at the renowned Jigger Inn by the course), with detours to historic sites on the way and also to charming Falkland (featured in the Outlander series). In St. Andrews he whisked away the two of us who were not golf enthusiasts on an impromptu private tour of two local sites of historic significance. James personalized the trip even further with a “not in the guidebooks” experience: James learned that my husband’s last name is Cash and that he thought he had an ancestral connection to the area. When we got to Falkland, James brought us down a side street in town to a bench and plaque dedicated to Johnny Cash. Johnny had visited when he’d learned that his ancestors had come from the area, and ultimately befriended the town and visited numerous times, even giving concerts. His daughter Roseanne followed in his footsteps. James was as excited as we were about this connection. And of course it was a highlight for my husband. We all were delighted with James’ historical tales and enthusiasm for his topic. We were impressed with how many sights he fit into the day while never seeming to rush, and how adaptable he was to suggestions and requests. Going in, I had no idea how much I would love this country; nor did I having any idea how brilliant our guide would be. We spend 10 days traveling through the country side of western Scotland. Every turn and every stop filled my eyes with breathtaking beauty, so much so that I could never choose a favorite.
